Q: I'm interested in learning a little Hebrew. Can you recommend a CD course?
A: If you’re looking for
a CD-ROM based language course in Modern Hebrew, I recommend the Transparent
Language “Language Now!” series. It lets you see and hear the language, play
it back at various speeds, and even visually compare your own voice to the
samples. There are grammatical explanations and vocabulary games, too. The
software can be found at Best Buy or CompUSA or other software retailers. If you
can afford to wait, both of these stores run specials every so often that
combined with the publisher’s mail-in rebate actually make it free, which
makes it a value that’s really hard to beat. Of course, if you don’t want to
wait, you can order directly from Transparent Language at:
http://www.transparentstore.com/dr/v2/ec_MAIN.Entry10?SP=10023&PN=1&V1=262964&xid=21430
Of course, there are also
audio-based courses on cassettes and sometimes CD’s. So far I have not
actually seen a Hebrew course on audio CD, but if they don’t have it now I
suspect it’s just a matter of time. Don’t neglect your local library as a
source of information, either. Many
libraries have audio and sometimes video courses available to borrow, and I once
found a nice audio course for rent at a video store. Even if you get a CD-ROM
course, audio courses on cassette or CD are great to have for listening to in
the car or while you exercise or whatever.
