Q: What do the Jewish people believe God has promised them?
A: Not all Jewish people believe the same things, of course, but I can identify at least two major promises that God made to the Jewish people which have greatly influenced Jewish thought over the ages:
1) The Land – ex.. The Torah (the five books of Moses) repeatedly promises the land of Canaan as an inheritance for the Jewish people. (see Deuteronomy 31:23 for example) Although they may be displaced from it for a time, it will always be theirs, and they will always return to possess it. (Deuteronomy 30:1-5)
2) A Messiah who will someday restore Israel to the land and establish a reign of peace. (Isaiah 9:5-6 in the Jewish Bible or Isaiah 9:6-7 in a Christian Bible, Isaiah 11:1-16, and many others)
There are many other promises in the Bible. We might also mention the promise of a New Covenant in Jeremiah 31:31-37, the promise that God himself would one day rule over Israel (Zechariah 14:9), the promise of a Fount of Redemption (Zechariah 13:1)
