Q: Do Jewish people really need to believe in Jesus? Aren't they saved anyway?

A: The New Testament tells us that the Good News (the literal meaning of the word "gospel") is "for the Jew first" (Romans 1:16). The apostle Paul, himself a Jew with a firm background in the Torah, (Romans 11:1) claimed "My heartˇ¦s desire for Israel is that they should be saved." (Romans 10:1)

Yeshua himself claimed to be called to "the lost sheep of Israel" (Mark 15:24). It was to a ˇ§leader of the Jewsˇ¨ (John 3:10) that he said that it is only by faith in the Son of God that a man can escape condemnation and find eternal life. (John 3:16-21)

Simon Peter addressed his first evangelistic message to the assembled ˇ§Men of Israelˇ¨ (Acts 3:12) and was addressing the Jewish Sanhedrin when he said, ˇ§there is no under name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.ˇ¨ (Acts 4:12)

The original Christians were all Jewish, and were in fact astonished to find that Gentiles could also be filled with the Spirit. (Acts 10:45) They clearly perceived the Gospel as being ˇ§for Jews.ˇ¨

So why does Romans 11:26 say that all Israel will be saved? Does this mean that every Jewish soul of every generation would be saved no matter what? Obviously not, in light of these other scriptures. Paul himself, who wrote these words, would not have been so concerned about Jewish salvation as to wish himself ˇ§cut offˇ¨ if it were all ˇ§in the bag.ˇ¨ One interpretation is that ˇ§allˇ¨ means ˇ§all who would believeˇ¨ in the same sense as ˇ§the fullness of the Gentiles.ˇ¨ Another is that ˇ§all Israelˇ¨ refers to that generation when Messiah will return and finally be accepted. The one interpretation we cannot accept is that anyone could be saved without trusting in Messiah Yeshua.

ˇ§I am the way the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through me.ˇ¨ John 14:6
